When the NSW Waratahs forwards packed down for their first scrum of the 2012 Super Rugby season against the Queensland Reds, they were missing a significant amount of the intellectual property and experience they have had at their disposal in recent years.

A late try from Hosea Gear helped the Highlanders win in Dunedin against the Crusaders on Saturday. At half time, they were winning 20-10 after tries from Andrew Hore and Phil Burleigh.

A brilliant hat-trick from centre Tom Carter helped the Waratahs coast past the Highlanders in a rain soaked encounter in Sydney.

The Waratahs retained second place in the Australian conference, but produced an uninspiring performance against a one dimensional Western Force

A brilliant individual performance from Quade Cooper and a tremendous defensive effort helped the Reds record their seventh consecutive win of the season
