The Hurricanes have signed prop Rohan Wingham on a two-year contract beginning with the 2027 Super Rugby Pacific season, adding further depth and versatility to their front-row options.
Rohan Wingham joins Hurricanes from Highlanders
The 23-year-old will move to Wellington following three seasons with the Highlanders, where he gained his first experience of Super Rugby Pacific.
Wingham can play on both sides of the scrum and made his Super Rugby debut for the Highlanders against the Hurricanes in 2024. He has since made eight appearances for the Dunedin-based franchise.
The prop said he was excited by the opportunity to experience a new environment and work alongside the Hurricanes’ players and coaching staff.
"I’m excited to be joining the Hurricanes in 2027. It’s a great opportunity to rub shoulders with some quality players and coaches, be part of a new environment, and to experience a new place,” Wingham said.
Otago prop continues Super Rugby development
Wingham came through the rugby pathway in Dunedin, attending King’s High School before becoming the school’s first New Zealand Schools representative in 23 years in 2020.
He progressed through the Highlanders U20 programme before representing North Otago in the Heartland Championship.
Wingham made his NPC debut for Otago in 2023 and has accumulated 38 appearances for the province. He started in Otago’s Ranfurly Shield victory over Canterbury and featured during their run to the 2025 NPC final.
Clark Laidlaw welcomes front-row competition
Hurricanes head coach Clark Laidlaw believes Wingham’s ability to cover both prop positions will make him a valuable addition.
"Rohan’s a young prop, plays both sides of the scrum, and already has Super Rugby experience,” Laidlaw said.
“With our strong track record of producing quality props, we really feel like we can help develop him through our props who he can learn from and compete against, as well as through Jamie Mackintosh and his coaching".
The new signing will link up with the Hurricanes ahead of the 2027 Super Rugby Pacific campaign.
