The Highlanders have appointed Jimmy Maher as an assistant coach on a one-year contract ahead of the 2027 Super Rugby Pacific season.
Maher joins Highlanders after North Harbour turnaround
Maher arrives after leading North Harbour through a major improvement during the 2026 National Provincial Championship.
North Harbour climbed from last place in 2025 to fourth in 2026 before their campaign ended with a quarter-final defeat to Taranaki.
Maher had taken over as North Harbour head coach after previously working as an assistant with Counties Manukau.
Highlanders head coach Jamie Joseph said Maher’s coaching experience, leadership qualities and focus on player development made him a strong fit for the organisation.
"Jimmy’s coaching expertise, leadership qualities, and a genuine passion for player development were key skills we were looking for in this appointment," said Joseph.
"It’s a role that will help drive an enhanced development mentality within the team with the goal of continual player improvement throughout the season.
"In his coaching career so far he has demonstrated the ability to connect with players, challenge them to improve, and help create environments where individuals and teams can thrive. We are excited about the energy he will bring to our programme .”
Former Counties Manukau player moves into Super Rugby
Maher played 40 matches for Counties Manukau between 2004 and 2007 and also represented the New Zealand Sevens programme during his playing career.
Maher to begin role in November
Maher said he was excited by the opportunity to join a Highlanders organisation with a strong history of developing players and building talent from across the southern region.
He will begin work with the Highlanders in November and will operate across the wider rugby programme alongside Joseph and the existing coaching group.
"The Highlanders have a proud history, a passionate supporter base, and a reputation for developing quality players and people.
"The opportunity to be part of that is one I am incredibly excited about. I am looking forward to working alongside the coaching group, staff, and players to build towards the future and continue to strive for success."
