Anton Segner signs long-term Blues deal to 2031

All Blacks loose forward Anton Segner has committed his long-term future to New Zealand rugby after re-signing with the Blues, Auckland Rugby and New Zealand Rugby through to the end of 2031.

The deal makes the 25-year-old the first current All Black contracted through to the 2031 Rugby World Cup in the United States.

Segner commits future to Blues and Auckland

Segner said remaining in Auckland was an easy decision after spending much of his rugby development in New Zealand.

“Signing a long extension with the Blues, Auckland Rugby and New Zealand Rugby gives me a long-term idea of where I’ll be playing my rugby and there’s no place I’d rather be than here in Auckland,” he said.

Born in Frankfurt, Germany, Segner moved to New Zealand in 2017 as a 15-year-old exchange student at Nelson College before establishing himself within the country’s rugby pathway.

All Blacks breakthrough caps rapid rise

Segner made his All Blacks debut against Italy in Wellington in July, featuring in New Zealand’s 47-17 victory, and has earned two Test caps during the 2026 international season.

He also produced strong performances against the Stormers and Bulls during the All Blacks’ tour of South Africa before an ankle injury ended his tour early.

Blues general manager of rugby Murray Williams praised Segner’s leadership and long-term commitment, saying the forward had developed into an important figure within the club.

“Anton is exactly the type of person we want at the heart of this club for the long term,” Williams said.

“We’ve seen him develop into a genuine world class player, and seeing him pull on the black jersey this year was a proud moment for everyone within our region.

“What stands out as much as his rugby is his leadership. Anton sets the standard every day, both in how he trains and in how he carries himself, and our younger players look to him for that guidance. Securing him through 2031 gives us huge stability as we build towards sustained success".

Segner builds long-term Blues career

Segner has made 54 appearances for the Blues since making his Super Rugby debut in 2022 and has played 17 matches for Auckland in the NPC since switching his provincial allegiance in 2024.

His pathway also included selection for New Zealand Secondary Schools in 2018 and an NPC debut for Tasman in 2020.

Segner has since captained Auckland and the Blues, with his new contract giving the loose forward the opportunity to remain in New Zealand through the next Rugby World Cup cycle.
