Hurricanes appoint Roger Randle as attack coach

The Hurricanes have appointed former All Blacks wing Roger Randle as an assistant coach for the 2027 Super Rugby Pacific season, with the experienced coach set to oversee the club’s attacking programme under head coach Clark Laidlaw.

Randle moves to the Hurricanes following eight seasons with the Chiefs, where he established himself as one of New Zealand rugby’s leading attack coaches.

The 52-year-old will work alongside Laidlaw and assistant coaches Cory Jane and Jamie Mackintosh as the Hurricanes prepare for their 2027 campaign.

Randle described the appointment as a homecoming and said he was looking forward to returning to a club he represented during his playing career.

"I’m really excited to join the Hurricanes and work alongside Clark and the coaching group. To come back home to the Hurricanes is something my whanau and I are looking forward to, and I can’t wait to get started at the club,” Randle said.

Former Hurricanes wing returns to Wellington

Born in Hastings, Randle made five appearances for the Hurricanes between 1996 and 1997 before continuing his Super Rugby career with the Chiefs until 2003.

He also represented Hawke’s Bay, Central Vikings and Waikato at provincial level and played twice for the All Blacks in 2001.

Randle enjoyed considerable success in sevens, winning two Commonwealth Games gold medals and the 2001 Rugby World Cup Sevens title with New Zealand. He scored 141 tries across 189 first-class appearances in New Zealand.

Clark Laidlaw welcomes experienced attack coach

Randle moved into coaching following his playing career and has subsequently worked with teams including Japan Sevens, Waikato, the New Zealand Barbarians and the Chiefs.

Laidlaw said Randle’s extensive Super Rugby experience and detailed understanding of attacking rugby would strengthen the Hurricanes’ coaching group.

"It’s a hugely important and exciting appointment. We have some space for some coaches to come in, and to find a coach of Roger’s experience and ability, we feel grateful that he’s chosen to come here,” Laidlaw said.

Randle is scheduled to join the Hurricanes in October ahead of preparations for the 2027 Super Rugby Pacific season.
