George McGuigan has committed his future to Newcastle Red Bulls after agreeing a new contract extension at Kingston Park.
The 32-year-old hooker and club captain has signed a one-year deal with an option to extend, ensuring he will continue to play a central role in Newcastle’s forward pack.
McGuigan has been one of the most consistent performers in the club’s recent history, scoring 52 tries across 179 appearances in all competitions.
A product of Newcastle’s academy system, McGuigan was the first graduate of the club’s ACE programme to progress into the senior side.
The North Yorkshire native is currently enjoying his third spell at Kingston Park, having previously represented Leicester Tigers, Gloucester and the Ospreys during his career.
Speaking after signing the extension, McGuigan said remaining with the club was a straightforward decision.
“It was an easy decision because this is such an exciting period for the club, and it is not somewhere I ever really wanted to leave.
“This is where I call home, and I’ve enjoyed being back up here this season. There has obviously been a lot of change, which is ongoing, and we’re building all the time.
“It’s a club that’s definitely going places, and long may that continue.”
Newcastle Red Bulls sporting general manager Neil McIlroy praised McGuigan’s leadership and influence within the squad.
“George has taken on a leadership role with us this season as one of our most experienced players, and I’ve been really impressed with how he has conducted himself.
“As well as the impact he has made behind the scenes he continues to play to a very high standard, and I’m happy that we have retained such a major asset.”
