Premiership Rugby have announced a 'comprehensive review' of its salary cap regulations after defending champions Saracens were penalised for a breach last month.

The Allianz Park outfit were docked 35 points in the ongoing Gallagher Premiership season and were also fined £5.36m for breaching the salary cap over the last three seasons.

The Premiership currently have a £7m salary cap, with two ‘marquee’ players allowed outside of it with questions raised on how Saracens could be operating within the limit in the ongoing season despite adding Elliot Daly and Jack Singleton in the squad.

Sarries, who currently are languishing at the bottom of the Gallagher Premiership table after they were docked 35 points on their part have accepted to submit their books during the mid-season.

"Premiership Rugby is in active dialogue with Saracens over additional measures to confirm its compliance for the 2019-20 season," read a statement from Premiership Rugby.

"PRL's rigorous compliance procedures already in place under the salary cap regulations require each club to make full submissions at the start and close of each season, together with ongoing obligations to work with the salary cap manager."

The Premiership Rugby has also confirmed that a committee led by former government minister Lord Myners will review the salary cap regulations ahead of the 2020/21 season to ensure more transparency.

“The success of Premiership Rugby is based on a group of fiercely competitive clubs who agree to play by the same set of rules on and off the pitch," said Premiership Rugby’s Chief Executive Darren Childs..

"The Salary Cap has been fundamental to promoting competition since its introduction and, while we continue to apply the existing regulations robustly, this Review is designed to ensure that we have a world-leading framework in place for the future.”
