Newcastle’s new era has begun with major upheaval as Steve Diamond has been dismissed just one game into the Prem Rugby season, while Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend has taken up a part-time advisory role with Red Bull.
Diamond’s exit comes days after a 39-17 loss to Saracens. Despite steering the club through two difficult seasons and recruiting experienced players such as Christian Wade and Liam Williams, Red Bull have moved quickly to restructure, ending his tenure with immediate effect.
"Today, Steve Diamond, Director of Rugby, is stepping down from his position," read a club statement.
"We would like to thank Steve Diamond for his passion, contribution, and guidance which have been instrumental in supporting the club throughout this important transition."
Alan Dickens will step up as head coach, with further appointments including Neil McIlroy as sporting general manager, John Fletcher in player development, and Jonny Petrie as incoming managing director.
The changes mirror Red Bull’s wider strategy seen across its sporting portfolio, with a focus on developing talent and reshaping leadership.
Townsend, meanwhile, will advise Red Bull on global rugby matters for 30 days a year while continuing as Scotland’s head coach. Scottish Rugby has endorsed the arrangement, viewing it as mutually beneficial.
A Scottish Rugby spokesperson said: “Red Bull have appointed Gregor Townsend as strategic adviser and consultant on their global rugby strategy with Scottish Rugby’s full knowledge and support.
"This is a great opportunity for Gregor with one of the biggest sporting organisations in the world. He will be participating in high-level strategic conversations with a powerhouse in sport and we see that as being beneficial to Scottish Rugby going forward. Gregor remains fully committed to his role as Scotland head coach and we see this new role working alongside that well."
