Newcastle Red Bulls have named New Zealand flanker Tom Christie as captain for the 2026-27 season after an impressive first campaign on Tyneside.

The 28-year-old has been handed the captaincy after scoring six tries across 19 appearances during his debut season with Newcastle.

Christie quickly established himself as an influential member of the squad, with his work at the breakdown and defensive contribution complementing his ability to carry the ball and contribute in attack.

The New Zealander said being chosen to lead Newcastle was a major honour, particularly as the club enters an important period of development.

“This is a really exciting time for the club with everything that’s going on and being planned for the future, so to be asked to lead the team during the season is truly special,” Christie said.

Christie brings title-winning experience to Newcastle

Christie arrived in England with considerable experience from New Zealand rugby.

The flanker won three Super Rugby titles during his time with the Crusaders and captained Canterbury to the National Provincial Championship title in 2025.

That leadership experience will now be central to Newcastle’s plans as the club looks to establish a new identity during the 2026-27 campaign.

Christie said Newcastle want to produce an entertaining style built around speed, intensity and high-energy rugby.

“We want to entertain and to keep our fans engaged, and everything we’re doing behind the scenes is around playing fast, high-energy rugby".

He also highlighted the continued backing of the club’s supporters following several challenging seasons and said the squad was determined to reward that loyalty with improved performances.

The new captain will now lead Newcastle as preparations continue for the upcoming campaign and the club begins the latest phase of its development.

“I’m fully bought into that, and the support we receive from our fans is incredible. They’ve turned up for us throughout some pretty tough years, and we’re working incredibly hard to reward the faith that has been put in us.”
