Wales international Liam Williams has signed a one-year contract with Newcastle Red Bulls ahead of the 2025-26 Gallagher PREM season.

The 34-year-old fullback, who can also play on the wing, links up with the squad as they prepare for their campaign opener.

Williams has won 93 caps for Wales and toured twice with the British & Irish Lions, earning five Test appearances.

His career includes Premiership, URC, Champions Cup and Six Nations titles, along with a Grand Slam triumph with Wales. He featured in this year’s Six Nations but has not played since sustaining a knee injury in January.

Speaking about his arrival, Williams said: “It’s a good opportunity to experience something new, and I can’t wait to get started.

"It’s an exciting time to be joining Newcastle with Red Bull taking over the club, and everything they’re able to bring to the sport.”

Newcastle’s director of rugby Steve Diamond hailed the signing, calling Williams “a proven winner” whose enthusiasm for rugby remains strong.

“Liam has done it all in terms of domestic, European and international rugby, but his enthusiasm for the sport remains as strong as ever.

“At this stage in our journey he gives us the kind of experience we need, and he’s a proven winner.

“Throughout our conversations it was abundantly clear he just wants to perform at the highest level, and he’ll be a great influence on the other players in our environment.

“I’m looking forward to seeing his impact on and off the field, and it just continues the growing sense of excitement around the club at the moment.”

Newcastle Red Bulls open their Gallagher Premiership campaign on Friday when they host Williams’ former club Saracens. The team hopes Williams will make an early impact as they look to begin the season on a strong note.
