Harlequins have officially confirmed the signing of experienced scrum-half Stu Townsend ahead of the 2025/26 Premiership Rugby season.

The 29-year-old makes the move after a successful spell with Exeter Chiefs, where he became a mainstay in the team’s line-up with over 120 appearances to his name.

Townsend was a key figure in Exeter’s rise to prominence, playing an instrumental role in their 2017 Premiership title win and their historic double triumph in 2020, which included both the Premiership and European Champions Cup titles.

His reputation for quick service, aggressive support play, and high-pressure decision-making made him a valuable asset throughout his time at Sandy Park.

“After so many great years at Exeter, the time felt right for a new challenge—somewhere I can push myself, grow as a player, and contribute to something fresh.

"Harlequins is a club steeped in history—the ambition from within and the environment being built really stood out to me. I can’t wait to get started, meet the lads, and get stuck into pre-season,” said Townsend.

Harlequins’ Head Coach Danny Wilson welcomed Townsend’s arrival with strong praise, calling him a player who understands what it takes to win at the highest level.

The coaching team highlighted his competitive nature, game intelligence, and experience in big-match situations as qualities that will bring a leadership presence to the squad.

“We’re delighted to bring Stu on board. He’s a proven performer at the highest level and someone who understands what it takes to win.

"His experience, especially in pressure moments, will be invaluable to our squad. Beyond his technical ability and sharp game management, he’s a competitor—tough, smart, and committed.

"He’ll bring leadership to our group, and we’re excited to see the impact he’ll have both on and off the field this season.”
