Western Force have announced the signing of former Crusaders hooker Ben Funnell ahead of the 2024 Super Rugby Pacific season.

Funnell made his professional rugby career with Canterbury in 2011 and went on to make his Super Rugby debut a year later. During his time with Crusaders between 2012 and 2019, the 33-year-old featured in 89 Super Rugby matches and also won five National Provincial Championships with Canterbury.

“Joining this esteemed organization is an honour, and I am genuinely thrilled about the opportunities ahead,” he said. “I am eager to contribute my skills, passion and dedication to the team's success.," he told the club's official website.

“I look forward to forging strong bonds with my teammates and making meaningful strides on the rugby field. Here's to an exciting and successful journey with the Western Force.”

Force head coach Simon Cron is delighted with Funnell joining the club ahead of the new season.

“The hooker position is one we’re trying to build depth in. We’ve got some exciting talent in that position in our Fortescue Academy who we think will be great in the future, but Ben’s recruitment provides someone in the interim who can add to the group and the culture with his knowledge and experience.”

Force will kick-start the 2024 Super Rugby Pacific season with a clash against Hurricanes on 23rd February at HBF Park.
