Exeter Chiefs have bolstered their front row options with the signing of experienced South African prop Khwezi Mona ahead of the 2025/26 Gallagher Premiership season.
The 32-year-old joins from the Hollywoodbets Sharks, where he made over 50 appearances, and will be playing in the English league for the first time.
Mona, who is capable of playing both loosehead and tighthead, said he was eager to embrace the challenge of English rugby.
“I’ve always respected Chiefs’ history and the hardworking culture that led them to conquer Europe,” he told the club's official website.
“This is the kind of team and environment I want to be a part of. I’m excited to learn from the coaches, contribute on and off the field, and test myself in such a competitive league.”
He also expressed his anticipation for playing at Sandy Park.
“I’ve heard about the incredible atmosphere and can’t wait to give the passionate fans something to cheer about. My focus now is to work hard, settle in quickly, and give my all for the badge.”
Director of rugby Rob Baxter highlighted the need for depth in the front row, particularly after tighthead Ehren Painter’s long-term injury and Marcus Street’s departure.
“Khwezi is an experienced player who has played a lot of high-quality rugby. The chance to sign him came because he’s just finished recovering from an injury. We’re making sure he’s fully fit before we push him into action.”
Baxter added that Mona had already settled in well with the squad. “He’s on-message with everything we’re trying to do.
"I think he has huge potential in the way we want to play and will be a big part of our plans across all three competitions.”
