Former England international Christian Wade will return to rugby union with Newcastle Red Bulls this December, bringing proven finishing power to the northern club.

The 34-year-old winger is the second-highest try-scorer in Gallagher Premiership history with 93 tries, just eight behind record-holder Chris Ashton. His tally includes a league-best seven hat-tricks, while last season he crossed for 11 tries in 14 appearances with Gloucester.

Wade’s career has taken him across multiple sports and competitions, including spells in the French Top 14, NFL, and most recently with Super League champions Wigan Warriors.

Diamond Hails “One of the Best Finishers”

Newcastle director of rugby Steve Diamond expressed his delight at securing Wade’s signature.

“Christian has scored tries wherever he has been and remains one of the best finishers in the game,” Diamond said.

“He impressed at Gloucester last season and even challenged himself in rugby league with Wigan. Beyond his ability on the field, he’s ambitious, articulate and will add great character to our group.”

Wade made no secret of his ambition to become the league’s all-time leading try-scorer.

“I’m coming to get that record,” he said.

“Of course, rugby is a team game and my main focus is helping Newcastle succeed, but I want to be the Premiership’s top scorer.

"When I signed for Gloucester, I said it would take me two years. Now, with Newcastle, I’ve got the chance to make it happen.”

Wade also praised the vision behind the Red Bulls project.

“There’s a massive buzz about Newcastle and I can’t wait to be part of it. Red Bull are a giant in sport and high performance, and I’m excited to contribute to what they’re building here,” he said.

“This is a new era for the club, and if I can help elevate the team, that would be something really special.”

The winger also thanked Wigan Warriors for his brief but valuable rugby league stint. “It’s been an honour to play for Wigan. Their fans are incredible, and I’ll take only fond memories before starting this new chapter in Newcastle.”
