Northampton Saints sign Ion Neculai

Northampton Saints have confirmed the signing of Italy international tight-head prop Ion Neculai from Zebre Parma ahead of the 2026/27 season.

Neculai arrives at Franklin’s Gardens after making 51 appearances across five seasons with Zebre Parma.

The Moldovan-born prop linked up with his new teammates last week as Northampton began preseason training ahead of the new campaign.

His arrival strengthens the Saints front row as the reigning Gallagher PREM champions prepare to defend their title.

Saints Add Italy International Prop

Neculai follows former Zebre teammates Malik Faissal and Danilo Fischetti to Northampton.

The 25-year-old said he was excited to join a club with the history and reputation of Saints. He added that the coaching quality, facilities and playing group were major factors behind his decision.

“I’m very excited to be joining a Club with the history and reputation of Northampton Saints,” said Neculai.

“To have the opportunity to test myself in this environment, with the reigning Gallagher PREM champions, is something I’m really looking forward to.

“The quality of the coaching, the facilities and the players around me were all major factors in my decision.

"I believe this is the right place for me to continue developing my game and challenge myself at the highest level".

Neculai Brings Zebre And Italy Experience

Born in Chi?inau, Moldova, Neculai moved to Italy at a young age and came through the ranks with Elba Rugby and I Cavalieri before joining Zebre in 2021.

He made his senior debut against the Lions in the United Rugby Championship and later represented Italy Under-20s, earning eight caps and scoring three tries.

Neculai progressed to Italy A before making his senior Test debut against Portugal. He has since featured against Romania, Georgia and Australia, earning his fourth Italy cap last month in Perth.
