Newcastle Falcons have strengthened their squad with the signing of Japanese international Amanaki Mafi on a one-year contract ahead of the upcoming season.

Known for his physicality, strong ball carrying, and offloading skills, the 35-year-old back-row forward arrives from Japanese Top League side Canon Eagles.

This will be Mafi’s second stint in English rugby after previously representing Bath. He also has extensive Super Rugby experience with the Melbourne Rebels and the now-defunct Sunwolves.

Standing at 6 foot 2, Mafi began his career in Tonga, representing the national under-20s side, before moving to Japan for university.

He spent five seasons with the NTT Shining Arcs, where his performances earned him a place in the Japanese national team, the Brave Blossoms, with whom he competed at the Rugby World Cup.

Newcastle Falcons’ director of rugby Steve Diamond expressed his excitement about the signing, highlighting Mafi’s dynamic style.

“Amanaki is a big ball carrier with great footwork and an offloading game, and someone who will get our fans off their seats," said Diamond.

"He makes an impact in both attack and defence, will bring others into the game, and I see this as a really significant signing for us".

Mafi, who has made over 30 Test appearances for Japan, is looking forward to the challenge of playing in the Gallagher Premiership once again.

“It’s a real honour to join a club like Newcastle Falcons. I’m grateful for the opportunity and excited for what lies ahead. I’m ready to work hard, learn, and do whatever I can to help the team,” he said.
