Newcastle Falcons have confirmed the return of experienced hooker George McGuigan on a one-year deal.

The 32-year-old re-joins the club where he began his professional career, having previously made 165 appearances and scored 48 tries during two earlier spells at Kingston Park.

McGuigan, an England A international, left the Falcons in December 2022 to join Gloucester and most recently played for Welsh side Ospreys. His return marks a homecoming to the club where he came through the academy ranks.

Speaking on his comeback, McGuigan said, “It’s a very exciting time for the club and I’m looking forward to being a part of this new journey.

"It’s been a difficult year so I’m looking forward to getting back to the club I call home, and hopefully showing everybody I’ve still got a lot to offer.”

Director of rugby Steve Diamond welcomed the signing, praising McGuigan’s attributes and past contributions.

“George is very well thought of at the club and has been very successful here previously. I haven’t worked with him personally, but I am looking forward to it.

"He has a real edge to his game, and as an opposition coach, he was always someone who caused me problems,” Diamond said.

He added, “He’s very physical, the nuts and bolts of his set-piece are good and he brings a lot of experience to our forward pack as we continue to build.”
