Munster Rugby, in collaboration with the IRFU, has announced that Tom Ahern has signed a two-year contract extension, securing his future with the province until 2027.
The 24-year-old lock and flanker, a product of Youghal RFC, Dungarvan RFC, and Waterpark RFC, has been a cornerstone for Munster since making his senior debut in November 2020 as an Academy player.
To date, Ahern has made 53 appearances for Munster, crossing the try line 12 times. Known for his athleticism, versatility, and skills, Ahern’s rise through the ranks has been remarkable. His performances at both lock and in the back row have showcased his ability to adapt and excel in multiple roles.
Ahern established himself as a key figure in the 2021/22 season, appearing in all three Champions Cup knock-out games, including two clashes against Exeter Chiefs and a nail-biting encounter with Toulouse.
His outstanding 2023/24 campaign further solidified his place in the squad, with 23 appearances, 14 of which were starts.
Despite earning a call-up to the Ireland squad for the Six Nations, an injury ruled him out of contention. However, his contributions to Munster’s success remain invaluable.
Ahern, who made his 50th appearance for Munster in a match against the All Blacks XV in November, expressed his pride in extending his stay with the province.
"It’s an honor to represent Munster, and I’m excited to continue this journey. The support from the club and fans has been incredible."
Munster Rugby’s Director of Rugby, Ian Flanagan, praised Ahern’s commitment: "Tom is a vital part of our team, and we’re thrilled he will continue to contribute to Munster Rugby’s success. His talent and work ethic set a great example for young players."
