Joe Schmidt joins Ulster Coaching Pathway

Ulster Rugby have confirmed the appointment of former Ireland head coach Joe Schmidt as Coach Development Advisor, a new consultancy role focused on strengthening coaching pathways across the province.

Schmidt will work with Ulster in a coach development capacity over the next 12 months. The role has been created to support coaches across the province and improve the link between different levels of the rugby pathway.

His work will include guidance for coaches involved in the academy, age-grade programmes, schools, clubs and the professional game. Schmidt is expected to make several visits to Ulster while also providing remote support throughout the year.

Ulster Coaching Pathway Strengthened

The appointment gives Ulster access to one of the most experienced coaches in international rugby. Schmidt previously led Ireland between 2013 and 2019, winning three Six Nations titles, including a Grand Slam.

Before his Ireland role, he enjoyed major success with Leinster, guiding the province to two Heineken Cup titles. He later worked with New Zealand as an assistant coach and was part of the set-up that reached the 2023 Rugby World Cup final.

Richie Murphy Welcomes Schmidt Appointment

Schmidt spent the last two years as Wallabies head coach before stepping down earlier this month. He has now returned to Irish rugby in a development-focused role.

Schmidt said Ulster has a proud rugby tradition and that developing the region’s coaching pathway could add long-term value to the game.
