Tamaiti Williams will miss the rest of the 2026 Super Rugby Pacific season after being diagnosed with discitis, an infection in one of the discs in his spine.

The Crusaders prop is currently in hospital receiving treatment, with the club confirming that his recovery timeline beyond this season remains uncertain.

Tamaiti Williams Ruled Out For Super Rugby Season

The 25-year-old loosehead has been sidelined for the remainder of the campaign in a major setback for the Crusaders.

Williams had been dealing with back pain for several weeks before medical scans and blood tests confirmed the infection. The club said he will remain under close medical supervision until his condition is stable enough for him to return home.

Williams said he was disappointed to see his season end in this way but relieved that the diagnosis was not worse.

“I’m feeling gutted, but I’m also grateful that the news isn’t as bad as what it could be,” he says.

“Being in hospital, you see a lot, and it makes you appreciate that this place is here to save us. I’ve been told I’m going to make a 100 percent recovery, so I’m thankful for that.”

All Blacks Front Row Depth Faces New Question

Williams’ absence is a significant blow for the Crusaders and may also affect New Zealand’s planning for the upcoming Test window.

The prop has become an important part of the All Blacks front row setup and his recovery will now be closely watched ahead of the international season.
