Blues halfback Taufa Funaki has signed a new contract through to the end of the 2028 Super Rugby Pacific season, extending his stay with the Auckland-based franchise.

Funaki has committed his future to the Blues after developing into a consistent performer since making his debut in 2022.
The 25-year-old has now made 42 appearances for the club and has become an important part of the squad through his speed around the breakdown, attacking instincts and growing leadership within the group.
Blues Retain Local Auckland Talent
A proud East Auckland product and Sacred Heart College graduate, Funaki came through the Auckland rugby pathway before representing New Zealand Under-20s.
Funaki said he grew up dreaming of wearing the Blues jersey and was grateful to continue representing Auckland.
“I grew up in Auckland dreaming of wearing the Blues jersey, so to be able to continue that journey and keep representing the 09 is something I’m grateful for,” he told the club's official website.
He also praised the support of the Blues fans and said running out at Eden Park was something he never takes for granted.
“The support from our fans has been unreal since I debuted. Running out at Eden Park in front of them is something I never take for granted, and I’m excited about what our new group can do over the next few years.”
Super Rugby Pacific Champion Stays
Funaki enjoyed a breakout 2024 season, scoring five tries in 13 appearances as the Blues won the Super Rugby Pacific title.
Blues General Manager Rugby Murray Williams said Funaki had grown significantly over recent seasons and had become a respected figure among his teammates.
“Taufa has developed into a well-respected leader among his peers and we’re pleased he’ll remain with us for another two seasons,” Williams said.
“We’ve seen huge growth in Taufa over the past few seasons and we’re excited about where his game can go. Retaining high quality local talent is a key part of our strategy, and Taufa is someone we believe will play a significant role in the future of the Blues.”
