Blues sign Nic Shearer for 2027 season

The Blues have strengthened their halfback options ahead of the 2027 DHL Super Rugby Pacific season by signing promising 23-year-old Nic Shearer.

The move brings another developing New Zealand talent into the Auckland squad as the club builds depth across key positions.

Nic Shearer Signs With Blues for 2027

Shearer will join the Blues ahead of the 2027 campaign after continuing his progression through New Zealand rugby.

The halfback has represented New Zealand at both Under-19 and Under-20 level and made his NPC debut with Canterbury before moving south to represent Southland.

His performances helped earn him an opportunity with the Highlanders, adding Super Rugby experience to a career that has developed rapidly over recent seasons.

Blues Strengthen Halfback Depth

Blues General Manager of Rugby Murray Williams believes Shearer will increase competition within an important area of the squad.

“Nic’s shown real growth over the last couple of seasons and we think he’ll add genuine competition and depth at halfback.

“We’re building depth across our spine for 2027, and Nic ticks a lot of boxes in his game management, kicking game and the way he directs a team around the park.”

Shearer Ready for Auckland Move

Shearer will relocate to Auckland later this year before joining his new teammates for preseason preparations.

The 23-year-old said he was attracted by the Blues’ playing philosophy and the direction in which the club is heading.

“I’m really excited to be joining the Blues for 2027. It’s a club with a great history and I can’t wait to get up to Auckland and get stuck in with the squad,” he said.

“This is a huge opportunity for me. The Blues have a clear vision for how they want to play and I want to be part of that going forward.”
