Scotland international Simon Berghan has been slammed with a six-week ban following his red card incident in the recently concluded Pro 14 clash against Glasgow Warriors at Murrayfield last weekend.

The 27-year-old was sent-off in the fifth minute of the game for stamping on the head of his Scotland team-mate Fraser Brown but despite being reduced to 14-men, Edinburgh went on to beat the Warriors 18-17.

A Pro 14 disciplinary committee concluded Berghan was "guilty of a stamping movement whereby the boot made contact with the head of a player who was vulnerable at the point of the incident".

The offence carried a 12-week maximum suspension but the committee gave him the minimum ban on account of his "good record, his apology to the victim player, the fact that no serious injury had occurred and the manner in which he and his club met the case".

As a result, Berghan will miss the Six Nations opener for Scotland against Wales on 3rd February.
