Rob Penney has officially been confirmed to continue as head coach of the Crusaders for the 2026 Super Rugby Pacific season, following a successful 2025 campaign in which he led the side to a championship title in his first year in charge.

Penney, who will enter his third season with the franchise, expressed gratitude and excitement at the extension.

“I’m really excited and humbled to be given the opportunity to work with this great organisation and team again,” he said.

“This group is on the cusp of doing something pretty special again and I’m rapt to be a part of it.”

The decision follows an end-of-season review conducted by the franchise. Crusaders CEO Colin Mansbridge spoke highly of Penney’s leadership, highlighting his strong connection with the team and the values he brings.

“Rob uses the term love a lot—he loves this place, loves the environment, and loves the players,” said Mansbridge.

“He comes from a real place of deep care, and I think that’s felt by all the players.”

Players reportedly praised Penney for his genuine care and commitment to their development, both on and off the field.

Now 61, Penney brings a strong legacy to the Crusaders, having played in the region before the professional era.

“It’s deeply engrained in me. I spent a long time here as a player before the Crusaders existed and I just love the red and black,” Penney said.

“Everyone is totally invested, and the players top it off with their commitment and dedication. It’s an honour to play a little part in it.”
