The NSW Waratahs have confirmed the signing of Ioane Moananu, a 24-year-old hooker from the Crusaders, ahead of the 2026 Super Rugby Pacific season.

Moananu stood out in the 2025 season with 12 appearances, including six starts, and emerged as one of the most promising talents in the competition.

Moananu made his Super Rugby debut in 2023 and further established himself this year with strong performances, scoring five tries across 18 matches.

Waratahs coach Dan McKellar praised Moananu’s versatility and work ethic, stating that he brings strong technical ability, mobility across the field, and solid defensive presence. McKellar emphasized that the signing will boost the team’s depth in the front row and support their long-term development goals.

“We watched Ioane closely at the Crusaders. Obviously, he had a good season with them," said McKellar to the club's official website.

“He got an opportunity through injury and proved that he belongs at this level.

“He is also a smart rugby player with a very good skill set.

"He has the ability to play on an edge or play through the middle. He also brings an on-ball presence defensively.

“He's a really good addition and adds strength and depth in what's a key position.”

Moananu is expected to compete with experienced hooker Dave Porecki for a starting role in the 2026 campaign.

“The opportunity to play in Super Rugby … and for my career moving forward, it was the best decision.

“Then, meeting with Dan McKellar and hearing his vision and seeing his plan for the team and organisation was what ultimately made me want to sign.

“He has a great plan, and he has the right people in the right places.

"He has a way he wants to play the game, and it fits the way I play which I am looking forward too.”
