Munster prop Oli Jager has announced his immediate retirement from professional rugby on medical advice, bringing an end to a 10-year playing career that included spells with the Crusaders, Munster and Ireland.
Oli Jager Retires From Rugby
Munster confirmed on Saturday that Jager had been advised to medically retire from the game with immediate effect. The 30-year-old said he was sharing the news with a “very heavy heart” after receiving medical guidance on his future.
“It is with a very heavy heart that I share that I have been advised to medically retire from rugby".
Jager joined Munster from New Zealand side the Crusaders towards the end of 2023 and made his debut for the Irish province in a United Rugby Championship win over Glasgow Warriors in December that year.
Munster Prop Ends Playing Career
The tighthead prop went on to make 35 appearances for Munster. His final match came in April, when he featured in the province’s URC victory over Ulster at Thomond Park.
Jager also earned one Ireland cap, coming off the bench against Wales during the 2024 Six Nations. He was later included in Ireland’s touring squad for the summer series in South Africa.
Reflecting on his career, Jager said playing professional rugby over the past decade had been a privilege.
“Playing professional rugby for the last 10 years has been nothing short of a privilege,” Jager added in the statement.
“I am incredibly grateful to everyone who has been part of my journey – my coaches, team-mates, medical and rugby staff, supporters, friends, and family. Each of you has helped shape me not only as a player, but as a person.
“While this chapter comes to an end, I look back with immense pride and gratitude for the experiences, memories, and relationships the game has given me.
“Who knows what the next chapter holds, but I’m excited to see what it has in store.”
