Nottingham Punished by Rampant Rotherham

One of Nottingham's worst performances of the season coincided with an excellent show from Rotherham Titans, who ran riot at Meadow Lane, running in eight tries to record a 51-7 win.

Having beaten London Scottish and then run Bristol so close in their last couple of home games expectations in the Nottingham camp were high.

All the more so as, when the two sides met at Clifton Lane earlier in the season, the Green and Whites had been unfortunate not to get a win.

But Rotherham looked determined not to allow a repeat of that, and kept their play off hopes on course with this emphatic and fully deserved win.

For Nottingham there was little, if any, consolation. They were outplayed in most departments and made a catalogue of errors, rarely looking capable of getting close to the visitors.

Winger Curtis Wilson ran in a hat trick and full back Sean Scanlon got two, with Nottingham's only score coming from a trademark Brent Wilson try.

A couple of missed tackles gave Curtis Wilson a clear run to the corner to open the scoring after just 43 seconds. Juan Socino converted to make it 0-7.

A driving maul from Nottingham brought a close range lineout five minutes later, the pack driving skipper Brent Wilson over and Jarvis levelling the scores with the conversion.

That was to prove their first and last score though as Rotherham's next attack brought a penalty for Socino to restore the lead in the 10th minute.

Another missed tackle saw Ali Birch make ground before sending in Scanlon for his first try, Socino again converting to make it 7-17.

And within a minute of the restart the visitors got a third when a quickly taken lineout took the Green and Whites by surprise, Birch getting the try but Socino off target with the conversion attempt.

Another catch and drive from Nottingham should have brought a score but the Rotherham defence held them up and then forced a penalty to clear the danger.

Rotherham then missed a golden opportunity to increase their lead when they wasted a four on one overlap.

Nottingham were also guilty of similar wastefulness though when the visitors gifted them another close range lineout following a huge kick form Jarvis, but the lineout throw was not straight.

The Green and Whites had their best spell of the game over the last ten minutes or so of the first half but made too many mistakes before letting the visitors in for an injury time try.

A fine tackle from Ryan Hough kept Wilson out when he looked certain to score, but Rotherham kept possession and the elusive winger duly grabbed his second try of the game, Socino making it 7-29 at the break with the conversion.

The visitors started the second half as they had the first - as did the Nottingham defence - with more missed tackles allowing outside half Dallan Murphy to break through in the opening minute, Socino converting to make it 7-36.

Another good spell from the Green and Whites came to nothing, and again they fell to the sucker punch as Wilson completed his hat trick. Scanlon's second came ten minutes from time before Michael Keating wrapped up the scoring with try number eight with four minutes remaining.
