Doncaster Knights have confirmed they will not proceed with an application for promotion to the Gallagher PREM for the 2026-27 season, even if they win the Championship and the required play-off.

The club said the decision was driven by the financial commitments needed under current promotion audit rules, despite again meeting the Minimum Standards Criteria.

Doncaster Knights Withdraw Gallagher PREM Application

In a statement issued on April 9, Doncaster said it would not continue with its promotion application because of the financial monitoring requirements attached to entry into the Gallagher PREM.

The club said those conditions would require significant spending beyond what it can commit to at this stage. That means even a successful season on the field would not lead to promotion for 2026-27.

Championship Winners Still Face Financial Barriers

Doncaster said it has passed the Minimum Standards Criteria for the last three years, but stressed that the main obstacle remains the level of financial commitment required by the Men’s Professional Rugby Board.

With the club planning to operate a new hybrid squad structure in the Championship next season, it said the required investment for promotion is not possible at present.

Yorkshire Ambition Remains In Long-Term Vision

Although Doncaster have stepped back from a 2026-27 application, the club said it still wants to be involved in the future development of the top tier.

The statement pointed to the possibility of a stronger Yorkshire-wide professional structure in the future, backed by significant outside investment.

Doncaster said such a model could represent the largest county in England and help bring elite rugby to more parts of the country, adding that the club would be proud to lead that ambition.
