Welsh are more than just a big pack, says Burnell

London Welsh head coach Justin Burnell says his side's third consecutive bonus point win shows the Exiles are more than just a big pack.

Welsh ran in five tries in a 42-18 win over Moseley at Old Deer Park on Sunday to take their tally to 17 tries in their last three games – Ollie Stedman (2), Nathan Morris, Joe Ajuwa and Nick Scott all crossing.

"People are quite quick to say we're a big heavy pack, and we are a big heavy side, but the skills within our pack are the best I've seen from a team that I've worked with,” said Burnell.

"People forget that. It's getting drier and the pitches are getting harder, and the bonus point wins are coming thick and fast. So we must be doing something right."

"It was a good win; we set a target of winning all five of our games in March and our last three games – Rotherham, Ealing and Moseley – have produced three bonus point wins.”

However, having leaked just one try in their last two games, the Exiles conceded twice to Moseley's pacey winger Matthew Williams in the second half.

"We can't complain but we're always going to be frustrated because of the nature of the squad we've got – we're always going to look for perfection and excellence,” added Burnell.

"People expect us to just rock up, but today was just one of those games. Moseley slowed the ball down a lot and they turned it into a dog-fight, which you can't do much about. It was a win, which was the most important part.”

Burnell had rotated his squad for the visit of Kevin Maggs' team, making nine changes from the side which defeated Ealing the previous week and giving an opportunity to the likes of Ollie Stedman and Joe Ajuwa, who both lined out for Rosslyn Park last weekend.

"Ollie summed it up for me. He came on and I thought he was great today. His contribution was fantastic,” said Burnell.

"The week before he's gone out on loan to Rosslyn Park and played against Loughborough Students. I got good feedback from that game and he came off the bench today and showed that."

"This weekend we also had Ollie Frost, Billy Moss and Mike Denbee playing for Henley and they had a fantastic win – 52-22 over Wharfedale – and Ben Pienaar was out playing for Rosslyn Park [in a 31-11 win over Tynedale].”

Welsh now head to Cornish Pirates on Sunday and with Bristol and Leeds Carnegie not in action, it's an opportunity to close the gap at the top of the table.

"It's the third out of these five games we've targeted and we've got to win that game. Our preparation this week won't change. It doesn't matter whether it's Bristol, Leeds or Pirates, the process will be the exact same. Our mind-set is to go there and hopefully get the result,” added Burnell.
