Northampton Saints 36-32 Gloucester, cinch Stadium @ Franklin's Gardens
Northampton Saints claimed a dramatic last-gasp victory over Gloucester Rugby in an enthralling Gallagher PREM encounter.
Northampton conceded five penalties inside the opening five minutes, and referee Matt Carley eventually sent Emmanuel Iyogun to the sin bin.
Gloucester used the extra man well. Charlie Atkinson kicked to the corner, the line-out worked cleanly, and the maul drove forward for Deian Gwynne to score. Atkinson’s conversion attempt struck the upright, leaving Gloucester 5-0 ahead.
Gloucester Build Early Lead
With the sin-bin period still running, Gloucester attacked again inside the Saints 22. This time they moved the ball wide after another clean line-out, allowing Ollie Thorley to finish in the corner. Atkinson converted to make it 12-0.
Northampton hit back against the run of play. After Gloucester gathered a loose ball in the wide channel, support at the breakdown was limited and the ball was ruled out. George Hendy reacted quickly, picked it up and ran in unopposed. Fin Smith converted.
The try lifted Saints, and they struck again almost immediately. George Furbank broke from the restart, with Tommy Freeman and Smith in support. Smith received the final pass and scored under the posts before converting to put Saints 14-12 ahead.
First Half Ends Level
Gloucester responded well despite the quick Northampton double. Caolan Englefield and Atkinson combined outside the Saints 22 before finding captain Seb Atkinson, who raced into the corner for Gloucester’s third try. Charlie Atkinson converted to make it 19-14.
Saints levelled before the break after a penalty allowed them to attack from the Gloucester 22. Smith grubbered behind the defence, and Rory Hutchinson reacted first to score. Smith’s conversion hit the post, leaving the match level at 19-19 at half-time.
Gloucester Retake Control
Gloucester again started the second half strongly, but only after a major defensive effort on their own line. From a scrum outside their 22, Englefield and Atkinson created space for Ben Loader, before Gloucester moved the ball coast-to-coast and sent Thorley close.
After sustained pressure, Atkinson produced a clever offload to Max Llewellyn, who sent a looping pass to Loader for Gloucester’s bonus-point try. The conversion was missed, but Gloucester led 24-19.
Northampton replied quickly through Freeman, who finished in the corner after Ed Prowse broke into the Gloucester 22. Smith missed the conversion, making it 24-24.
Saints Win It At The Death
Gloucester moved back in front after a rare back-field mistake from Freeman gave them an attacking scrum. Atkinson launched the move and combined with his centres to send Llewellyn over. The conversion was missed, but Gloucester led 29-24.
Saints then edged ahead with 14 minutes remaining when Sam Graham powered through under the posts. Smith converted to make it 31-29.
Gloucester refused to fade and won a penalty with three minutes left. Atkinson kicked it to put the visitors 32-31 ahead.
But Northampton had one final attack with the clock in the red. Desperate to secure a home semi-final, Saints built one last opportunity and George Furbank scored the decisive try to seal a thrilling win.
