Bristol flanker Jon Fisher has taken an indefinite break from the game following the head injury that he sustained in December.

The 28-year-old suffered the blow during the European Challenge Cup clash against French club Pau and has remained on the sidelines since then.

Bristol's acting head coach Mark Tainton confirmed that the former England Saxons player wants time out to assess his playing career.

"'Fish' has taken the decision to step back from playing," said Tainton.

"The welfare of our players is of utmost importance, and we support Jon's decision."

Fisher, who has played for Northampton Saints, London Irish and Bedford Blues before joining Bristol thanked everyone who handed him support during the difficult phase.

"The medical team at Bristol Rugby have been hugely supportive and professional throughout. This has been a difficult decision, but I believe it is a positive one.

"I've been fortunate enough to represent some fantastic clubs, playing alongside some great players and characters.

"In my experience of Bristol Rugby, although short-lived, the future is most certainly bright, and I wish all involved every success."
