Worcester Warriors have confirmed the signing of Ireland international Peter Stringer on a short-term deal ahead of the 2017/18 season.

The scrum-half, who is set to become 40 at the end of the year had represented Munster, Saracens, Newcastle Falcons, Bath and Sale Sharks previously while making 98 international appearances for Ireland between 2000 and 2011 and was part of the Grand Slam and three Triple Crowns winning squads.

Stringer has penned a six month contract with the Sixways outfit and will provide cover to South Africa's Francois Hougaard, who will be away for international duty at the start of the season.

Warriors Director of Rugby Gary Gold believes age is just a number for the scrum-half.

"Peter is an experienced number nine who will play a key role in the absence of Francois.

"He's in incredible physical shape for someone of 39 years of age, and he is an outstanding role model for our younger players."

Meanwhile, Stringer, who will join his longtime Munster and Ireland teammate Donncha O'Callaghan at the club said he is looking forward to the opportunity.

"I'm looking forward to meeting all the lads and being reunited with Donncha.

"I'm feeling as fit and ready as ever and am genuinely excited about getting back on the field as I feel I still have plenty to offer."
