Lloyd Williams returns to Worcester Warriors

Lloyd Williams has come out of retirement to rejoin Worcester Warriors ahead of the opening weekend of the 2026/27 Elior Champ Rugby season, with the scrum-half immediately available for Saturday’s clash against Bedford Blues at Sixways.

Williams spent the 2025/26 season with Worcester, making 22 appearances, scoring six tries and captaining the club on two occasions during their successful return to professional rugby.

The experienced scrum-half announced in May that he would retire at the end of the season. His final appearance came in Worcester’s Champ Rugby play-off final victory over Bedford, when the Warriors won 27-14 at Goldington Road to secure the title.

Williams has now reversed that decision and returned to the Worcester squad ahead of the new campaign.

He described his return as a surreal experience but said it had been great to come back, see everyone and fit back into the Worcester environment, adding that he had received a warm welcome.

Worcester begin title defence against Bedford

Williams could make his comeback against the same opponents he faced in what was expected to be the final match of his professional career.

Worcester host Bedford at Sixways on Saturday, September 19, with kick-off scheduled for 3pm. The fixture is a repeat of the 2025/26 Champ Rugby final and marks the opening league weekend for both clubs.

Matt Everard welcomes Williams return

Warriors head coach Matt Everard welcomed Williams back, highlighting the influence the scrum-half had on both the playing and coaching groups during his first season with Worcester.

"We are delighted that such a brilliant person both on and off the pitch as Lloyd has decided to re-join us ahead of the season," said Everard.

Lloyd was a massive influence not just on the playing group last season, but also on the coaching staff through his attitude and desire to continually grow.

His impact on the pitch is outstanding, but the experience and wealth of knowledge he brings is excellent. We can't wait to see how he continues to add to the group."
