Queensland Reds flanker Fraser McReight has been appointed captain for the 2026 season, stepping into the leadership role after previously serving as a key figure in the playing group.

The 26-year-old has built a strong leadership profile in Australian rugby, having captained Australia Under-20s in 2019. He also led the Wallabies as a stand-in captain in the Rugby Championship in 2025.

McReight has been recognised with major domestic awards, including winning Australia’s Super Rugby Pacific Player of the Year in both 2023 and 2024. He also claimed the Pilecki Medal as Queensland Rugby’s top individual honour in 2024.

The Reds squad for 2026 includes several experienced leaders, with Wallabies captain Harry Wilson among the senior figures alongside Tate McDermott, Jock Campbell and Lukhan Salakaia-Loto, as McReight prepares to lead a group targeting further progress.

"As the Reds, we are a team that wants more success. Great teams have many leaders and I feel that is a strength we can call on," McReight said.

"Harry leads through his actions. As Wallabies captain, he speaks at the right times and asks questions.

"Likewise, for me, it's important to know when to ask for help from our other leaders in the playing group, Les (Kiss) and our specialist coaches.

"Tate is a leader with that fierce, competitive, rip-in attitude of his that he always brings. He is also a halfback and game-driver who naturally demands a lot."
