Brumbies have secured highly rated Australian Under-20 forward TJ Talaileva, with the Hunter Wildfires back-rower set to join the club’s wider training group ahead of the 2027 season.

TJ Talaileva earns Brumbies opportunity

Originally expected to play Colts rugby with the Hunter Wildfires, Talaileva quickly forced his way into the Shute Shield side after impressing with his size, pace and powerful ball-carrying.

Standing 189cm and weighing 106kg, the 19-year-old played 12 first-grade matches during his breakthrough campaign. He finished ninth among Shute Shield forwards for metres gained, seventh for defenders beaten and ninth for tries scored despite missing part of the season while representing Australia Under-20s.

His performances have earned him a train-and-trial agreement with the Brumbies for 2027, followed by a full contract from 2028.

Junior Wallabies form strengthens Talaileva rise

Talaileva also featured in five matches at the World Rugby U20 Championship in Georgia.

The back-rower scored twice during Australia’s 95-0 victory over Spain, further strengthening his reputation as one of the country’s promising young forwards.

He will now move to Canberra and join a strong Brumbies back-row group featuring Rob Valetini, Charlie Cale, Rory Scott and Toby Macpherson, alongside new recruit Leafi Talataina.

Talaileva said the opportunity to train alongside leading Australian forwards was a major attraction, adding that the Brumbies’ physical and attacking style of rugby appealed to him.

“I’m really excited to be coming to Canberra and joining the Brumbies. It’s a great opportunity to test myself against some of the best backrowers in the country and around the world.

“I’ve always liked the way the Brumbies play — it’s tough, physical and exciting rugby. I’m looking forward to getting stuck into that environment and seeing what I can bring to the team".
