Harlequins have confirmed that Danny Care, one of the most iconic figures in English rugby, will retire at the end of the 2024–25 season, bringing to a close an extraordinary professional career spanning nearly two decades.

The 37-year-old scrum-half, who joined Harlequins from Leeds Tykes in 2006, has become the club’s all-time leading appearance-maker in the professional era, amassing 394 matches and cementing his place as a fan favourite through his electric pace, inventive style of play, and enduring passion for the game.

During his glittering career, Care played a pivotal role in Harlequins’ most triumphant moments, helping the club clinch the Premiership titles in 2012 and 2021, as well as the Challenge Cup in 2011.

Beyond the silverware, he has served as a leader, mentor, and role model to generations of Quins players and supporters.

On the international stage, Care made his debut for England in 2008 and went on to earn over 100 caps. His international résumé includes three Six Nations Championship victories, including the 2016 Grand Slam, and appearances at the 2015 and 2023 Rugby World Cups. In the latter, he played a crucial role in England’s run to the semi-finals.

Reflecting on his decision, Care said: “So, it's finally time. Unfortunately, after 19 years of playing for this incredible Club, I'm going to be retiring from rugby at the end of the season.

"I just wanted to say thank you from the bottom of my heart for letting a lad from Leeds come down to this Club and feel like home from day one.

"To all the fans. Thank you for everything you've given me and my family… I can’t really put into words what representing this Club and playing in front of you all has meant to me.”

Harlequins Chief Executive Laurie Dalrymple hailed Care’s legacy, calling his career achievements “phenomenal” and praised his contribution not just on the pitch but across the broader rugby community.

Care will remain with the club in an ambassadorial role, continuing to engage with fans and support the Harlequins Foundation.

Director of Rugby Billy Millard commended Care’s leadership, noting his instrumental role in guiding the team to the 2021 Premiership title and calling him “one of the greatest to play for Harlequins.”

Head Coach Danny Wilson echoed the sentiment, describing Care as “an inspiration” and a player whose unconventional and energetic approach defined the club’s spirit.
