Courtney Lawes is set to leave French club Brive at the end of the season, opening the door to a return to PREM Rugby and potentially bringing the former England captain back into national selection discussions ahead of the next World Cup cycle.
Courtney Lawes Leaving Brive
Brive have confirmed that Lawes will depart when the current campaign ends, closing a two-season spell in France’s Pro D2.
The 37-year-old joined the club after leaving Northampton Saints in 2024 and has remained an influential figure with his experience, leadership and physical presence.
In his farewell message, Lawes said his time at Brive had been unforgettable and that he would continue giving everything for the club until the season concludes.
“I’m having an experience in Brive that I’ll never forget, both on and off the pitch.
"I’m going to give it my all until the end of the season to finish this adventure with CAB in the best possible way. My family and I have been very warmly welcomed in Corrèze and we will always have Brive at heart.”
PREM Return Boosts England Eligibility
A move back to the Premiership would immediately restore Lawes’ eligibility for England selection under the Rugby Football Union’s long-standing rule that generally limits selection to players contracted with English clubs.
That makes any return to the domestic game significant, especially with England always valuing experienced forwards who can cover both the second row and back row.
Reports suggest several PREM clubs are monitoring his situation, although no new destination has been confirmed.
England Return and World Cup Possibility
Lawes retired from international rugby after the 2023 Rugby World Cup, ending a distinguished England career that included 105 caps and appearances at four World Cups in 2011, 2015, 2019 and 2023.
