Wales lock-forward Andrew Coombs has been handed a three-week ban after being cited for allegedly stamping on an opponent’s head.

The incident took place in last Friday’s Guinness PRO12 game between Newport Gwent Dragons and the Ospreys at Rodney Parude, as Coombs was involved with fellow international teammate Alu-Wyn Jones.

Coombs appeared before an independent three-man PRO12 disciplinary committee in Dublin on Tuesday, league organisers announced.

The panel viewed footage and heard representations made by, and on behalf of, Coombs.

In upholding the citing, they decided his offence warranted a mid-range entry point of five weeks under International Rugby Board sanctions.

"In imposing a suspension of three weeks, the committee took into account the various mitigating factors, including the player's apology to his opponent and his previous good disciplinary record," a PRO12 statement read.

"Andrew Coombs is free to resume playing on Monday October 6, 2014 and has the right of appeal."

Coombs, 29, will miss the Dragons' next three PRO12 games against Glasgow, Treviso and the Scarlets.
