Van Zyl backs Taulupe Faletau for fourth World Cup bid

Cardiff head coach Corniel van Zyl believes Taulupe Faletau is likely to remain motivated by the prospect of representing Wales at another Rugby World Cup as the veteran back-rower prepares for the new season.

Faletau, 35, has signed a new one-year deal with Cardiff and could return near the start of the 2026-27 campaign after recovering from a shoulder injury that has kept him out since March.

Speaking about the experienced No.8’s international ambitions, Van Zyl suggested that playing for Wales again would remain an important target.

“I can't speak for his personal goals, but I'm pretty sure he will want to give it a go and represent Wales at another World Cup,” Van Zyl said.

Faletau could target fourth Rugby World Cup

If Faletau earns his way back into the Wales squad, the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia could become a significant long-term target.

The three-time British and Irish Lions tourist represented Wales at the 2011, 2015 and 2023 World Cups, while injury ruled him out of the 2019 tournament.

He will be 36 when the 2027 competition begins, but Van Zyl’s comments suggest the Cardiff veteran has not necessarily closed the door on extending his international career.

Cardiff hoping for sustained Faletau fitness

Faletau’s immediate priority will be returning to regular rugby following another injury-disrupted campaign.

His quality has remained evident when available, and a sustained run of appearances for Cardiff could put him back into contention for Steve Tandy’s Wales squad.

Aaron Wainwright currently provides strong competition at No.8, meaning Faletau will need to demonstrate both fitness and form.
