Scarlets vow to fight for West Wales future

Scarlets have insisted they intend to remain “at the heart of west Wales” after Welsh Rugby Union plans left them in a survival battle with Ospreys.

Scarlets Respond To WRU Restructure

The WRU has confirmed its plan to reduce Wales’ four men’s professional teams to three from the 2028/29 season.

Under the proposed model, one team will be based in Cardiff, one in the east and one in the west. Cardiff and Dragons have been confirmed for the capital and eastern licences, leaving Scarlets and Ospreys competing for the single western place unless a merger is considered.

The decision has placed the future of both west Wales regions under intense scrutiny.

Scarlets Vow To Stay In West Wales

In a message to supporters, Scarlets said their focus remained unchanged despite the uncertainty created by the WRU announcement.

The club said its mission was to remain at the forefront of a strong and sustainable future for rugby in west Wales. Scarlets added that they were heading into the new season with confidence and purpose after making progress on and off the field.

"It is our mission, as it has always been, to be at the forefront of a strong, meaningful and sustainable future for rugby in west Wales. Our focus remains unchanged and unhindered," said Scarlets in a statement released.

"We head towards an exciting new season with confidence and purpose. We have made significant progress on and off the field and that momentum will continue at pace."

Recruitment Drive Under Nigel Davies

Scarlets endured a difficult 2025/26 season, finishing 14th in the United Rugby Championship and only just above Dragons.

The club also made a major leadership change, with Nigel Davies replacing Dwayne Peel and being confirmed as Director of Rugby for the next two seasons.
