Brumbies 32-15 Western Force, Canberra
The ACT Brumbies returned to winning ways with a much-needed 32-15 victory over the Western Force at GIO Stadium in Canberra.
After losing six of their previous eight matches, the Brumbies needed a response to strengthen their Super Rugby Pacific finals position, and captain Ryan Lonergan led from the front.
Lonergan scored a try, kicked two important penalties and controlled the tempo from scrum-half as the Brumbies moved back into fifth place on the ladder.
Brumbies Make Fast Start
The Brumbies opened the scoring inside two minutes when young lock Lachie Shaw picked up from the ruck and forced his way over the line.
The Force settled after the early setback and responded through prop Harry Johnson-Holmes, who crashed over from close range to bring the visitors back into the contest.
The Brumbies then regained the lead after Corey Toole produced a strong run to create space for Ollie Sapsford, who finished the move. The hosts went into halftime leading 14-10 after a competitive opening half.
Lonergan Takes Control
After the break, Lonergan extended the Brumbies’ advantage with a penalty goal before scoring himself in the 53rd minute. His brother Lachlan Lonergan provided the pass, and Ryan finished smartly to give the home side breathing room.
The Force refused to fade and hit back through Carlo Tizzano, who powered over from a lineout maul to keep the visitors in the contest.
However, the Brumbies stayed composed. Lonergan added another penalty to stretch the lead again and keep the Force under pressure.
Mickelson Seals Debut Try
The decisive moment came in the 75th minute when local product Chris Mickelson crossed shortly after coming off the bench, scoring on his Super Rugby debut to seal the win.
