Newcastle Falcons have strengthened their squad with the signing of Argentina scrum-half Simón Benítez Cruz on a two-year contract.

The 25-year-old, who made his international debut in Los Pumas’ historic victory over the British & Irish Lions in June, has quickly built a strong Test record.

He featured in both matches against England during their recent tour and started in Argentina’s win over Uruguay three weeks ago.

Currently preparing for the Rugby Championship opener against New Zealand, Benítez Cruz will link up with fellow Argentine international Eduardo Bello at Kingston Park.

He was named Most Valuable Player in the 2024 Super Rugby Americas season and has a strong domestic pedigree with Buenos Aires club CUBA, the same side that produced former Newcastle centre Matias Moroni.

Benítez Cruz has also excelled for Pampas and Tarucas in Super Rugby Americas, as well as representing Argentina in international sevens, notably scoring against Fiji in the World Sevens Series.

The new signing expressed his excitement about the move, saying: “I’m incredibly honoured to be joining Newcastle, a club with a rich history of Argentinian players.

"I’m confident this is the right step for my career and I can’t wait to play in front of the Falcons fans.”

Falcons director of rugby Steve Diamond praised the addition, stating: “We’ve tracked Simón closely and believe he will bring real quality to our squad.

"His early international performances show he’s a running threat, and we see plenty of potential in him.”
