Gloucester Rugby has confirmed the signing of versatile outside back Ben Loader for the 2025/26 season.
The former London Irish and Stormers star will return to English rugby after a successful stint in South Africa.
Loader, 26, is capable of playing on the wing and at full-back, making him a valuable asset to Gloucester’s attacking structure.
Hailing from Reading, Loader first emerged through the London Irish academy, joining at just 15 years old. He made his professional debut for the club in the Challenge Cup against Edinburgh in 2017 and went on to make 75 appearances over six seasons before departing in 2023.
Later that year, he signed with the Stormers in South Africa, where he has made 21 appearances to date, further developing his game in the fast-paced United Rugby Championship.
Loader has also represented England at the U18 and U20 levels, finishing as a runner-up in the 2018 U20s World Championship. He was later called up for an England XV against the Barbarians in 2019, signaling his potential for higher honors.
Director of Rugby, George Skivington, expressed his enthusiasm about securing Loader’s services, recognizing his growth as a player.
“Ben was another player at Irish that was thriving there when they ran into their difficulties. He’s moved away to a new country and team and used it as an experience to learn and grow and that’s been impressive.”
He also highlighted Loader’s attributes, stating, “He’s everything you want from a back three player—fast, powerful, agile—and his ability to play both wing and full-back will be really handy throughout a long season.”
Loader is eager to return to English rugby and take on a new challenge at Kingsholm.
“I’m incredibly excited to join Gloucester Rugby next season. I’ve really enjoyed my stint playing with the Stormers in South Africa, but the opportunity to return to England next season with Gloucester was too good to turn down.”
He also emphasized his excitement about working with George Skivington and James Lightfoot Brown once again.
“The Club’s ambitions match my aspirations for the future and I’m excited to work with George and James again, who I know can help me develop my game even further.”
