Wallabies international James Horwill has signed a three-year contract extension with Harlequins which will keep him with the Aviva Premiership club until 2020.

After a nine-year stint with Super Rugby franchise Queensland Reds, Horwill switched to Quins in 2015 and in two years, he has featured in 33 games.

The 31-year-old has also captained Australia on numerous occasions including the 2011 World Cup and between 2007 and 2016, the 6 ft 6 in lock has made 62 international appearances. His last appearance, though, came during the home series against England in June.

Harlequins rugby director John Kingston has high regards for Horwill and is expecting him to play an integral part in the club's future.

"From the moment James joined Harlequins 18 months ago, he has shown himself to be both a world class player and an outstanding leader," Kingston said.

"This signing is a statement of our intent for the coming years."
