Munster Rugby have confirmed that forwards coach Alex Codling will leave the province this summer to take up a new coaching opportunity in France’s Top 14.
Alex Codling To Depart Munster Rugby
Codling initially joined Munster in November 2024 as a forwards coach consultant, combining the role with his work as forwards coach of the Ireland Women’s team.
The 52-year-old later moved into the role on a full-time basis after helping Ireland reach the quarter-finals of the Women’s Rugby World Cup.
Codling made a strong impact during his time with the province, helping the squad reach both the Champions Cup and URC quarter-finals.
Munster Forwards Coach Heads To France
A former England lock, Codling has built a wide coaching career across club and international rugby. Before joining Munster, he had worked with Newcastle Red Bulls, England Men, Harlequins and Oyonnax.
Munster head coach Clayton McMillan said Codling had shown outstanding passion for lineouts, along with a strong work ethic, attention to detail and close connection with players.
“Alex has an unparalleled passion for lineouts. This is reflected through his outstanding work ethic, high attention to detail, and strong connection to the players.
“We understand the significant sacrifices he has made over the last two seasons to help us grow at Munster, and whilst we will miss his influence, we wish him all the best in his exciting new chapter.”
Codling said leaving Munster was an extremely difficult decision and thanked the club’s supporters, especially the travelling fans who backed the team away to La Rochelle.
“It was an incredibly tough decision to leave Munster as I have loved every minute of working with this special group of players.
“I just wanted to give a big shout out to the incredible Red Army. Seeing thousands of you away at La Rochelle last year is something that I will treasure for the rest of my life.
"You really are the 16th man! I wish everyone associated with the club every success moving forward.”
