Premiership side's looking at Olympic Stadium

Two Premiership rugby clubs have sounded out the Olympic Park Legacy Company (OPLC) about the possibility of using the Olympic Stadium following the London 2012 Games, according to reports.

Alongside Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham's bid to play at the stadium, the OPLC chief executive Andrew Altman has claimed that they have also had preliminary conversations with two Premiership rugby sides, the NFL and Essex County Cricket. West Ham are still favourites to take on the ground but they will have to do so with the running track intact.

"We welcome football but it's not solely dependent on football," Altman said. "There are other combinations of other sports, concerts and activities that can also provide revenue.

"What we are going out for provides maximum flexibility for the public sector to make sure we return value for money. We are just looking to see how we can populate the calendar with as many things as we can that can be compatible and work together."

It is likely that if a Premiership rugby team is to play at the stadium then it will be in a ground share capacity with another football team, according to The Guardian. One such example of this is the Liberty Stadium, in Swansea, which is currently shared between Swansea football club and the Ospreys.

And with Saracens looking at a potential stadium switch and London rivals Wasps also pondering a move away from their Adams Park ground, they may be tempted in looking into the possibility of playing at the 60,000 capacity stadium. The deadline for applications is March 23 with a decision due in May.
