Jamie George has criticised Saracens team-mate Totoa Auvaa’s behaviour during a nightclub incident involving England cricketers Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson, calling the conduct unacceptable while also saying the young player needs support.
Jamie George Criticises Totoa Auvaa Incident
George said Auvaa had made a serious mistake during the incident at Rex Rooms in Chelsea in the early hours of June 8. The Saracens player was involved in an altercation in which a punch reportedly aimed at Atkinson missed and struck an ECB security staff member, who required stitches.
Auvaa has avoided formal sanctions from Saracens after the club completed an internal review. The PREM club described the incident as regrettable but said it remained supportive of the 21-year-old player.
Saracens Stand By Young Player
George said Auvaa’s behaviour had to be clearly identified as unacceptable, but also stressed the importance of guiding him. He described the academy player as immature and said senior figures at Saracens must ensure he has the right role models around him.
"He's a young kid who has only left Samoa once," George told The Times and The Telegraph.
"He is immature. He is a rabbit in the headlights in London. He's a good kid, but he's got it wrong. There's no disputing that. But we need to make sure that we establish that sort of behaviour is unacceptable.
"There's also a bit of me that thinks we've got to look after him because he doesn't know right from wrong at the minute.
"We'll look after him. We will make sure that he's got role models around him."
Auvaa, a former Samoa age-grade captain, is yet to make a senior appearance for Saracens. The club has said its internal review was conducted in line with its procedures and that no further action is required.
