Premiership Rugby has announced that former Welsh Rugby Union chief executive Martyn Phillips has been appointed as the new chairman.

He will take over the role from Andy Higginson, who held the role since December 2019 and helped them oversee the challenges of Covid-19.

The appointment of Philips follows after the appointment of Sarah Massie-Taylor as Premiership CEO last month.

Phillips has experience of working as the chief executive of Welsh Rugby Union between 2015 and 2020 and also was the interim managing director of the British & Irish Lions earlier in the year ahead of their tour of South Africa.

"There is a significant opportunity for Premiership Rugby to continue to develop the tournament and its commercial rights to their full potential," he told in a statement.

"I am very excited about this new role and look forward to working together with Simon and his team, the clubs, owners and investors over the years ahead."

Widely regarded as the most competitive rugby union league in the world...it can only be the Gallagher Premiership.

The division is becoming more and more exciting as each year passes by so who will be lifting silverware at Twickenham in May?
