Moana Pasifika created franchise history with a stirring 27–21 win over the Blues in Auckland, claiming their first-ever victory over their cross-city rivals in a landmark Round 14 clash of the Super Rugby Pacific season.
The emotional triumph at North Harbour Stadium not only delivered a moment of pride for the Pacific Island-based side but also launched them into serious playoff contention.
The match opened with energy and intensity from Moana Pasifika, who were determined to assert themselves early. A well-taken penalty from fly-half Patrick Pellegrini gave them a 3–0 lead and a psychological edge.
But the Blues responded in trademark fashion. A dominant maul led to a penalty try in the 26th minute, and minutes later, captain Patrick Tuipulotu powered over the line for a second score.
With Beauden Barrett converting both, the visitors stretched out to a 14–3 lead and appeared to be in control.
However, just before halftime, Moana Pasifika struck a crucial blow. Kyren Taumoefolau finished off a sweeping backline move to cut the deficit. At the break, the Blues held a slender 14–11 advantage, but the momentum was beginning to shift.
Moana Pasifika came out of the sheds with purpose and immediately began to impose themselves on the match. Pellegrini added two well-struck penalties to flip the scoreline and give his side a 17–14 lead.
With the Blues looking disjointed and scrambling to regain control, Taumoefolau took centre stage. In the 57th minute, he finished off another fluid passage of play to grab his second try.
Nine minutes later, he completed a sensational hat-trick—his third of the season—extending Moana’s lead to 27–14 and sparking wild celebrations among the home crowd.
Although Hoskins Sotutu crossed for a late try for the Blues, with Barrett adding the extras, it was too little, too late. Moana Pasifika remained composed in the dying stages, defending their line with discipline and heart to close out the 27–21 win.
This breakthrough result is not just a morale-boosting victory for Moana Pasifika—it’s a defining moment. It was a performance full of passion, physicality, and belief. They now find themselves in the top six, with genuine playoff ambitions coming into focus as the regular season nears its end.
