Newcastle Red Bulls captain Tom Christie has signed a new two-year contract extension that will keep him on Tyneside until at least the end of the 2028/29 season.

The 28-year-old openside flanker has become a key figure since arriving from New Zealand and has scored six tries in 24 appearances for the club.

Christie commits future to Newcastle

Christie made 19 appearances during his first campaign with Newcastle before taking over the captaincy this season.

“We’re at the start of a really exciting journey here,” Christie said. “There’s no limit as to what can be achieved at this club.”

He added that Newcastle had quickly become a home away from home for himself and his fiancée Sophie, praising the city and the club’s supporters.

Christie captained Canterbury to the 2025 National Provincial Championship title before moving to Newcastle later that year.

Former Crusader brings winning experience

Before moving to England, Christie built his career with the Crusaders and was part of three Super Rugby title-winning campaigns.

His defensive work, breakdown ability and high work rate have made him an important member of Dan McFarland’s Newcastle squad.

McFarland praised Christie’s leadership and professionalism, describing his influence on the wider playing group as significant.

“Tom’s leadership and professionalism are having a huge influence on our other players, and it’s fantastic to get this extension locked in.

“He has an incredibly high level of involvements in our games and his effort level is unsurpassed.

“His ability in defence and at the breakdown is well known throughout the sport, and in addition to that he is bringing a real attacking edge to his game".
